Joey Lenderman:

Hey, I’m Joey from Enchanted Gardens. Today, we’re going to talk about poinsettias. So, poinsettias are always around at Christmastime, right? But a lot of folks don’t know that they are actually a tropical plant that need to be protected from the cold in the winter time.

Tips to keep your poinsettia nice longer would be when you water, feel the soil when you go to water. If it’s dry, then you’ll want to take it out of this foil sleeve that they come in, or whatever container it might’ve been in.

I always put them in the sink. Soak the soil pretty good, and then leave it in the sink for 20 or 30 minutes to let it drain fully. And then you can go ahead and put it back in your sleeve or your container.

Always be sure to keep the plants protected from the cold in the winter time. Again, they’re tropical, so you don’t want them exposed to the cold. So, if you sometimes keep them outside, always bring them in before it gets below, say, 45 degrees at night. And that will help your poinsettias look beautiful all the way through Christmas.
