Houston Organic Garden Tips & Advice
Kelly:
Hi, I’m Kelly with Plants for All Seasons, and today we’re going to talk about, well, gloomy weather and days after it’s rained, and you’re just not sure did your plants get enough water or not? Sometimes we walk outside and we see droplets like this all over the foliage of our plants and we think, oh, it rained and that was really good. But did the water make it all the way down to the roots?
And those are things that we have to investigate. So to do that, you would simply pull back your mulch, look at your soil, dig around a little bit and see if the soil is wet or dry. Actually, it is kind of shallow amount. If it appears dry, turn on those sprinklers. Doesn’t matter if it’s winter, spring, summer, or fall, you can go ahead and water or if you’re a hose water like me, you can go ahead and get that hose out and give a good soaking.
If you’re a potted plant person, check the top layer of your soil. If it appears to look dry, but you’re not sure if the water has gone deep enough into those pots, pick up your pot if you can. If it’s nice and light, go ahead and give it a drink. If it feels nice and heavy, wait a few days. But just because we’ve had rain, doesn’t mean that the water went where we needed it to, to the root system. So here’s the hoping to good rainfall and rainwater is the best water, but if you have to do your sprinklers too, that’s fine.
