Sherri Harrah:

I am Sherri Harrah with HomeShow Garden Pros, and I’m joined here today with Frank Smith from Coast of Maine Soils.

Frank Smith:

Glad to be here. Thank you.

Sherri Harrah:

So glad to have you. Coast of Maine has a whole line of OMRI certified soils and one of those is cactus and succulent soil.

Frank Smith:

Absolutely.

Sherri Harrah:

Cactus and succulents need very good drainage.

Frank Smith:

Absolutely.

Sherri Harrah:

What else makes a cactus and succulent soil?

Frank Smith:

So to have a really comprehensive cactus and succulent, you need aged bark, you need plenty of sand, mentioning the drainage, if you will. We have some compost in there, very little, but some calcium, the fish bone meal, some kelp. And by the time we’re done with that, you can actually see some visible growth within three to four months on your cactus and succulents.

Sherri Harrah:

Which is amazing because they’re so slow growing.

Frank Smith:

Absolutely. That’s the key. It really is.

Sherri Harrah:

So whether we’re doing it in a pot or in the landscape, you can use the Coast of Maine cactus and succulent soil?

Frank Smith:

Yes. And the one thing I would highlight is you don’t normally mix that 50/50 with a native soil only because it’s got everything that the cactus and succulent need.

Sherri Harrah:

Mm-hmm.

Frank Smith:

It’s going to be a much higher percentage, almost all cactus and succulent soil if you’re going to plant those in the ground.

Sherri Harrah:

Absolutely. So for more great information like this, join us on Saturday mornings from 7:00 to 9:00 on HomeShow Garden Pros.
