Benefits of Water Lilies

What’s the deal with water lilies? I’m Mary with Nelson Nursery & Water Gardens, and right here I have a beautiful, unique lily called the Fox Fire. This water lily, a lot of people think that water lilies don’t have roots, but guess what? All of these leaves and this flower are all connected through these big stems down to a pot that we have sitting on the bottom of the pond here.

And just like any plant, these guys need nutrients. So we fertilize our water lilies every two weeks with a compressed fertilizer tab, and that keeps them blooming and blooming and blooming. A great reason to add a water lily to your pond is it’s going to give you shade. And if you have fish, your goldfish in the pond, that’ll protect them from predators like herons. They have a place to hide. So a water lily is a wonderful addition to any water garden. It’s pleasing to the eye and helps your pond ecosystem.
