Scratch and Sniff

Dany Millikin: There’s a trend when it comes to gardening that’s really beneficial, and that’s raising up the beds to a place where you don’t have to bend down enough. Anita has a really cool box here. Anita, tell me about this box.

Anita Nelson: Well, it’s made out of cedar so it won’t rot. And we have it planted with a lot of different plants that have scents to them.

Dany Millikin: That’s awesome.

Anita Nelson: We call it our scratch and sniff garden.

Dany Millikin: Okay, so I’m supposed to rub on these and give them a smell.

Anita Nelson: That’s right.

Dany Millikin: Ooh, mint.

Anita Nelson: Mint. Oh, here we have lavender.

Dany Millikin: Oh, that’s one of my favorites.

Anita Nelson: And basil.

Dany Millikin: That’s so cool. Scratch and sniff gardening is also a great way to get kids involved in gardening, because that smell really helps them connect with what they’re doing.

Anita Nelson: Right, and this raised bed also has the garden right at the kids’ level. They can get their noses right into that foliage and smell all those wonderful fragrances.

Dany Millikin: Now I know a lot of herbs really like it dry, they love well-draining soils, and I guess this raised bed does that really well?

Anita Nelson: Yeah, something like this will dry out quickly. That’s what these plants love, and it’s easy for you to get to and water it when the time comes for them to be watered.

Dany Millikin: And harvesting because you have a bunch of culinary plants here.

Anita Nelson: No bending over.

Dany Millikin: Oh, that’s nice for the old back.

Anita Nelson: Yeah.
