Irene Pawlowski:

Hi, I’m Irene, and we’re going to learn today about daylilies. So the daylily, this one has already bloomed and you can see there’s a bract over here with the little seed pod. And I’m going to show you how, which this is a perfect perennial and a lot of people enjoy buying it. So I thought I’d show you how when you buy it, what to do with it. So the first thing you notice, it is root bound. So we need to break it up to help it out, which you may use a knife, a screwdriver, or whatever comes in. It does not hurt the daylily. And by the way, the daylily, because it’s a perfect perennial, comes in all various sizes, heights from 18 inches to 48 inches tall. They also have blooms from spiders to orchid looking, every color you can think, except for blue.

And they are very good to use for front borders, middle of the borders, against the borders. They last, they bloom from spring till almost fall. And depends on the variety they also have where you don’t have to, they’re very good in the summertime. That’s one thing about it. You don’t have to water them as much. They’re very forgiving. I’m trying to split this one so we can show you how you can break it up, because after five years they get very root bound and you need to break it up or they won’t bloom as pretty. Now your daylilies have several fans, and this one here is only an 18-inch one. This is called a fan. So what you need to do after you break it up, spread the roots out a little bit. And because of our hot summers, which they do not mind, they do require about six hours of minimum sun.

Make a little hill and take and plant on top of the hill, a little bit about an inch or two of the normal ground, and then hill it up like this. After you put a little bit of MicroLife, you can put it under the thing, you could sprinkle around it and it will not burn the plant, and then mulch it. When you have short ones like that, they’re good in front of the beds, the taller ones are good in the backside of the beds and very little care. And that’s all you need to do with the daylily.
